What is Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)?

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a group of inspection techniques used to evaluate the integrity, quality, and reliability of materials, components, and welds without causing damage.

NDT is widely used in industries such as Oil & Gas, Power Plants, Refineries, Structural Fabrication, Pressure Vessels, and Pipelines to ensure safety, quality, and compliance with international standards.

Types of NDT Techniques

Radiographic Testing (RT / RTFI)

Detects internal weld defects using X-rays or Gamma rays.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Identifies surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials.

Penetrant Testing (PT)

Used to detect surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws.

Visual Testing (VT)

Initial inspection method for surface conditions and workmanship.

NDT Codes & Specifications

Commonly used international codes and standards followed during industrial inspection, welding, and defect acceptance evaluation.

ASME BPVC Section V Non-Destructive Examination methods & techniques
ASME B31.3 – Process Piping Design, fabrication & inspection of piping systems
ASME BPVC Section VIII Div.1 Pressure vessel design & inspection
ASME BPVC Section IX Welding & welder qualification
AWS D1.1 / D1.1M Structural welding code – steel
ISO 10675-1 Radiographic testing acceptance levels
ISO 10675-2 Radiographic acceptance – aluminium & alloys
